Help your Trees Survive Drought

Aug 12, 2024 | The Tree Wisdom Blog

We’ve had some very dry stretches of weather this year in North Georgia, and it’s been hard on the trees, grass and landscapes in general.  Minimizing the impact of drought on trees is crucial for maintaining healthy landscapes. Trees are long-term investments, and protecting them during periods of drought requires proactive care.  Trees are generally very durable, but long droughts can weaken them and shorten their lifespan.   Young trees and trees already challenged by other, difficult growing conditions are most vulnerable to the effects of a drought.  Here are some tips for protecting your trees.

Watering Wisely
The most effective way to help trees during drought is by watering them efficiently. Deep watering, which involves soaking the soil to a depth of 12-18 inches, ensures that water reaches the tree’s root zone. Watering should be done slowly, using drip irrigation, soaker hoses, or a slow-release watering bag. It’s best to water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation. Established trees should be watered every 10-14 days, while younger trees may need more frequent attention.

Mulching
Applying a layer of organic mulch around the base of trees helps retain soil moisture and keeps the roots cool. Mulch should be spread in a 2-4 inch thick layer, extending to the tree’s drip line, but it should not touch the trunk to prevent rot. Mulch also reduces competition from weeds and grasses, which can absorb valuable moisture.

Pruning and Maintenance
During drought, trees should be pruned to remove dead or diseased branches. This reduces the tree’s overall water demand and allows it to focus its resources on maintaining healthy growth. However, avoid heavy pruning during droughts, as it can stress the tree further.

Soil Health
Improving soil health by adding compost or other organic matter can enhance water retention and provide essential nutrients to trees. Healthy soil supports a strong root system, making trees more resilient during drought.

Choosing Drought-Resistant Species
When planting new trees, opt for drought-resistant species that are adapted to your region’s climate. These trees are naturally better at conserving water and will require less care during dry periods.
